O-ring And Gasket Which Seal Is Better
Oct 05, 2019
The O-ring is the same as the gasket:
Both meet this implicit condition: when the sealing contact pressure is greater than the pressure of the sealed medium, the sealing effect is maintained;
When the sealing contact pressure is less than the pressure of the sealed medium, the gasket or O-ring is opened and a large amount of leakage occurs in the medium.
The difference between an O-ring and a gasket:
Flat gasket seals contain gaskets, flanges and bolts to form a complex static system; seal contact pressure is provided by the deformation of the bolt. The contact pressure distribution during the operation of the flat gasket is uniform. When the medium pressure fluctuates and is greater than the contact pressure, leakage may occur.

Contrast: For conditions with constant pressure, both can be matched;
However, for variable operating conditions, when the pressure rises, it may exceed the contact pressure range of the gasket, and the medium opens the sealing gap and leaks. O-rings complete the gasket.
In application, the gasket is only used for static sealing, and the O-ring can be used for both static sealing and dynamic sealing of reciprocating linear motion.
In the design, the traditional method of gasket sealing design is not strict enough. The new flange gasket design specification is in the process of experimental research; the design of O-ring can be as simple as it is simple and reliable, and convenient and practical.
